the unpublished memoir relating to reading back over old diaries and learning that those times (in your 20's) were better than you recall. in fact, the gift given to your present self by your old self is that "we're doin' ok". anything to the contrary exists in the gap between memory and fiction.

after revealing i had read over 10 years of history that my young self had carved out the time to fastidiously write daily, a friend asked me "did you like your old self"?. my old self made me laugh which is better than cringing.
